WordPress vs Shopify for Kerala Businesses in 2026

The short answer: if selling products online is the main job, pick Shopify. If publishing content, generating enquiries, or running a custom site is the main job, pick WordPress. The wrong choice costs you a rebuild within two years - here is how to choose once.

What each one is actually for

Shopify is a hosted e-commerce platform: payments, checkout, orders, shipping and security are built in and maintained for you. WordPress is a general-purpose website system you host yourself: it can do almost anything, including e-commerce through WooCommerce, but you (or your developer) are responsible for hosting, updates and security.

Real monthly costs in India

Shopify costs more per month and includes the maintenance. WordPress costs less per month and makes the maintenance your problem. Price both honestly before deciding.

Where Shopify wins

For a Kerala brand selling snacks, clothing, cosmetics or any physical product - including selling to Gulf customers - Shopify is usually the right default.

Where WordPress wins

For a service business in Kerala whose website is mainly a brochure plus enquiry engine, WordPress is usually the better long-term fit.

Common mistakes I see

A simple decision rule

Count what the website must do every week. If the answer is "take orders and payments", choose Shopify. If the answer is "publish pages and get enquiries", choose WordPress. If it is genuinely both, pick the one that matches the bigger half and keep the other half simple - a WordPress site with a Shopify buy button, or a Shopify store with a small blog, both work.

Common questions

Which is cheaper in India, WordPress or Shopify?

WordPress is cheaper on paper: hosting runs Rs 200-1,500 per month for a small business site versus Shopify from about $39 (roughly Rs 3,300) per month. But WordPress needs maintenance time or a maintenance retainer, while Shopify includes maintenance in the fee. Price both honestly before deciding.

Which platform is better for selling products from Kerala?

Shopify. Checkout, payment gateways, COD handling, shipping integrations and order management work out of the box, and a small catalog can go live in days. For a Kerala brand selling physical products, including to Gulf customers, Shopify is usually the right default.

When should a Kerala business choose WordPress?

When the website's main job is content, enquiries or custom features: clinics, schools, builders, consultants and news-style sites that win customers through articles and local search, plus booking systems, directories and membership areas. Your hosting, your database, no platform lock-in.

Can I switch platforms later if I choose wrong?

You can, but it means a rebuild - and the wrong choice typically costs exactly that within two years. Decide based on the site's main job: selling products points to Shopify, publishing content or generating enquiries points to WordPress.

I am Afnan CH, a web developer in Calicut working with businesses across Kerala. I build and maintain both platforms, so my advice is not tied to selling you one of them. Not sure which platform fits?
